12. Mittens In Beige With Twisted Ribbing

Yarn: 75 % wool, 100 g = approx 200 m
Yarn Amount: approx 70 g
Needles: set of 5 double-pointed 4 mm or size needed to obtain the gauge
Gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rounds in stockinette stitch = 10 cm
Size: Woman's M
Measurements: 19/21 cm around above/below thumb, 26 cm long with the edge uncurled

Abbreviations:
st(s), k, p – stitch(es), knit, purl
k-tw – knit a twisted stitch: knit through the back loop of a stitch
pu-k3 – pick up and knit the indicated amount of stitches
k2tR – knit 2 together with a slope to the right: insert the right needle knitwise into next 2 stitches at once and knit them together as if they were one stitch
k2tL – knit 2 together with a slope to the left: slip 2 stitches one at a time knitwise, place them back on the left needle, then knit them together through the back loops as if they were one stitch
K2tL-tw – knit 2 together with a slope to the left and the right stitch twisted: slip the first stitch purlwise, slip the second stitch knitwise, place them back on the left needle, then knit them together through the back loops as if they were one stitch

/ – the number after slash symbol shows the amount of stitches for the round, sometimes it is also suggested how to arrange the stitches on the needles
Mitten
The mitten is worked in rounds. Cast on 13+10+10+9=42 stitches dividing them over 4 needles as directed, use long-tail cast-on and work over two needles held together to get an elastic edge. Make sure that the cast-on edge is not twisted and using the fourth needle (the one with 9 stitches) knit 1 stitch from the first needle (the one with 13 stitches). / 12+10+10+10=42 sts
Round 1-10: Knit. / 42 sts
Round 11: { k1-tw, p1 } 21 times.
Rounds 12-20: Repeat round 11.
Round 21: { k1-tw, k1 } 21 times.
Rounds 22-37: Knit.
Round 38 for left mitten: k14, place 9 sts on waste yarn, cast on 5 sts using backward-loop cast-on, k19. / 38 sts
Round 38 for right mitten: k19, place 9 sts on waste yarn, cast on 5 sts using backward-loop cast-on, k14. / 38 sts
Rounds 39-62: Knit. / 9+10+9+10=38 sts
Round 63 for left mitten: k38. / 38 sts
Round 63 for right mitten: k37, leaving the last stitch unworked move it from 4th needle to 1st needle, move also the last stitch from 2nd needle to 3rd needle. / 10+9+10+9=38 sts
Round 64: { k1-tw, p1, k2tR, k12, k2tL, p1 } twice. / 34 sts
Round 65: { k1-tw, p1, k14, p1 } twice. / 34 sts
Round 66: Same as round 65.

Cut the yarn and thread it through the remaining stitches. Pull it firmly to tighten the opening, fasten off on the inside and weave in the end.
Thumb
The thumb is knitted using 9 stitches held on waste yarn, 5 stitches picked up along the cast-on edge on round 38, and 2 stitches picked up between the held stitches and the cast-on stitches – 1 stitch on each side of the thumb. Start knitting in 3rd stitch on the cast-on edge and work in rounds. Both thumbs are knitted in the same way.
Round 1: pu-k3, pu-k1-tw, k9, pu-k1-tw, pu-k2. / 16 sts
Round 2: { k1-tw, p1 } 8 times. / 16 sts
Rounds 3-17: Repeat round 2.
Round 18: { k2tL-tw } 8 times. / 8 sts
Close the opening using the same method as described for the mitten. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
