Mitten
The mitten is worked in rounds with a jump between rounds. Join the rounds with a slip stitch in first double crochet on working round. Next round begins with 2 chain stitches. First double crochet on next round is worked in first double crochet on previous round, that is into the same double crochet where the joining slip stitch was worked. Work in double crochet all the way through except when you are working with the brightest color of the yarn, work then in double crochet cross stitches. The first and the last dc on each round, and 2 dc together are to be worked always in a regular way. I've chosen to work the thumb using only the darker shades of the yarn.
Round 1 (fringe): { ch 9, sk 1, 7 sl sts } 20 times. / 20 fringe strips, 20 free chs
Round 2: ch 2, { 1 dc in same ch where last sl st was worked, 1 dc in next ch } 20 times, sl st in first dc on working round. Sew the gap between the first and the last dc while fastening off the yarn end. / 40 dc
Round 3: ch 2, 40 dc, sl st in first dc on working round. / 40 dc
Rounds 4-13: Repeat round 3.
Round 14 for left mitten: ch 2, 13 dc, 1 s-dc, ch 5, sk 5, 1 s-dc, 20 dc, sl st in first dc on working round. / 40 sts
Round 14 for right mitten: ch 2, 20 dc, 1 s-dc, ch 5, sk 5, 1 s-dc, 13 dc, sl st in first dc on working round. / 40 sts
Rounds 15-22: Repeat round 3.
Round 23: ch 2, { [2 dc], 16 dc, [2 dc] } twice, sl st in first dc on working round. / 36 sts
Round 24: ch 2, { [2 dc], 14 dc, [2 dc] } twice, sl st in first dc on working round. / 32 sts
Round 25: ch 2, { [2 dc], 12 dc, [2 dc] } twice, sl st in first dc on working round. / 28 sts
Round 26: ch 2, { [2 dc], 10 dc, [2 dc] } twice, sl st in first dc on working round. / 24 sts
Round 27: ch 2, { [2 dc], [2 dc], 4 dc, [2 dc], [2 dc] } twice, sl st in first dc on working round. / 16 sts
Round 28: ch 2, { [2 dc] } 8 times, sl st in first dc on working round. / 8 sts
Leave the remaining loop on the hook. Pick up 3 loops by inserting the hook in 2nd to 4th double crochet stitches on the last round and pulling up the yarn through these stitches like in Tunisian crochet. Move all loops onto double-pointed needle. Pick up 4 loops more in the same way inserting the hook in 5th to 8th dc. Cut the yarn, thread it through all loops and pull it firmly to tighten the opening. Fasten off on the inside and weave in the end.
The thumb is worked in rounds in the same way as the mitten. Start crocheting the thumb on the right side of thumb opening for the left mitten, and on the left side of thumb opening for the right mitten.
Round 1 for left thumb: Attach the yarn in the middle of first s-dc on round 14, ch 2, 1 dc in same s-dc where the yarn was attached, [1 dc in 14th dc and 1 dc in 15th dc on round 13], 3 dc in 16th to 18th dc on round 13, [1 dc in 19th dc and 1 dc in 20th dc on round 13], 2 dc in second s-dc on round 14, [1 dc in 20th dc and 1 dc in 19th dc on round 15], 3 dc in 18th to 16th dc on round 15, [1 dc in 15th dc and 1 dc in 14th dc on round 15], 1 dc in first s-dc on round 14, sl st in first dc on working round. / 14 sts
Round 1 for right thumb: Attach the yarn in the middle of second s-dc on round 14, ch 2, 1 dc in same s-dc where the yarn was attached, [1 dc in 27th dc and 1 dc in 26th dc on round 15], 3 dc in 25th to 23rd dc on round 15, [1 dc in 22nd dc and 1 dc in 21st dc on round 15], 2 dc in first s-dc on round 14, [1 dc in 21st dc and 1 dc in 22nd dc on round 13], 3 dc in 23rd to 25th dc on round 13, [1 dc in 26th dc and 1 dc in 27th dc on round 13], 1 dc in second s-dc on round 14, sl st in first dc on working round. / 14 sts
Round 2: ch 2, 14 dc, sl st in first dc on working round. / 14 dc
Rounds 3-4: Repeat round 2.
Round 5: ch 2, { [2 dc], 3 dc, [2 dc] } twice, sl st in first dc on working round. / 10 sts
Round 6: ch 2, { [2 dc], 1 dc, [2 dc] } twice, sl st in first dc on working round. / 6 sts
Close the opening using the same method as described for the mitten.
Scarf
The scarf is worked in double crochet and double crochet cross stitches in the same way as mittens, only in rows (back and forth). Each row consists of 30 stitches. Start each row with 2 chs and 1 dc, and finish with 1 s-dc without paying attention to the color of the yarn. The fringe is also worked in the same way as for the mittens, only longer.
Row 1 (fringe): ch 30, sk 1, 29 sl sts, { ch 31, sk 1, 29 sl sts } 14 times. / 15 fringe strips with 14 free chs between them
Row 2 (right side): ch 1, 29 sc inserting the hook in chs where last sl sts where worked and in free chs between fringe strips.
Row 3 (wrong side): ch 2, 28 dc, (2 dc).
Row 4: ch 2, 29 dc, 1 s-dc. / 30 sts
Repeat row 4 untill you have as long scarf as you want. Finish the scarf with a row of single crochet stitches (30 sc) while working from the wrong side, and then work the fringe as follows: { ch 30, sk 1, 29 sl sts, sk 1 sc, 1 sl st in next sc } 15 times. / 15 fringe strips
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
