47. Light Red Mittens With Lace Stitch

Yarn: 100 % wool, 100 g = approx 350 m
Yarn Amount: approx 90 g
Needles: set of 5 double-pointed 4 mm or size needed to obtain the gauge
Gauge: 21 stitches and 30 rounds in stockinette stitch worked with two strands = 10 cm
Size: Woman's M/L
Measuremets: 20/23 cm around above/below thumb, approx 32 cm long

Abbreviations:
st(s), k, p, yo – stitch(es), knit, purl, yarn over
pu-k3 – pick up and knit the indicated amount of stitches
k-tw – knit a twisted stitch: knit through the back loop of a stitch
k2tR – knit 2 together with a slope to the right: insert the right needle knitwise into next 2 stitches at once and knit them together as if they were one stitch
k2tL – knit 2 together with a slope to the left: slip 2 stitches one at a time knitwise, place them back on the left needle, then knit them together through the back loops as if they were one stitch

Mitten
The mitten is worked in rounds with two strands. Cast on 13+12+12+11=48 stitches dividing them over 4 needles as directed, use long-tail cast-on and work over two needles held together to get an elastic edge. Make sure that the cast-on edge is not twisted and using the fourth needle (the one with 11 stitches) knit 1 stitch from the first needle (the one with 13 stitches). / 12+12+12+12=48 sts

Round 59 for left mitten: k16, place 11 sts on waste yarn, cast on 5 sts using backward-loop cast-on, k21. / 42 sts
Round 59 for right mitten: k22, place 11 sts on waste yarn, cast on 5 sts using backward-loop cast-on, k15. / 42 sts
Rounds 60-82: Knit. / 42 sts
Round 83: { k1, k2tL, k16, k2tR } twice. / 38 sts

Cut the yarn and thread it through the remaining stitches. Pull it firmly to tighten the opening, fasten off on the inside and weave in the end.
Thumb
The thumb is knitted using 11 stitches held on waste yarn, 5 stitches picked up along the cast-on edge on round 59, and 4 extra stitches picked up between the held stitches and the cast-on stitches – 2 stitches on each side of the thumb. The extra stitches are knitted twisted on the first round and knitted together with neighbouring stitches on the second round. Work in rounds with two strands.
Rounds 1-2 for left thumb: Start by picking up the last stitch on the cast-on edge.
Round 1: pu-k1, pu-k2-tw, k11, pu-k2-tw, pu-k4, k2tL.
Round 2: k2tR, k9, k2tL, k2tR, k4. / 16 sts
Rounds 1-2 for right thumb: Start by picking up 2 stitches between the held stitches and the cast-on stitches on the left side of thumb opening.
Round 1: pu-k2-tw, pu-k5, pu-k2-tw, k10, k2tL.
Round 2: k2tR, k3, k2tL, k2tR, k10. / 16 sts
Rounds 3-14: Knit. / 16 sts
Rounds 15-17 for left thumb:
