Leave the remaining loop on hook. Pick up 4 loops by inserting hook in 2nd to 5th dc on the last round and pulling up the yarn through these stitches like in Tunisian crochet. Move all loops onto double-pointed needle. Pick up 5 loops more in the same way inserting hook in 6th to 10th dc. Cut the yarn, thread it through all loops and pull it firmly to tighten the opening. Fasten off on the inside and weave in the end.
Thumb
The thumb is worked in rounds in the same way as the mitten. Start crocheting the thumb on the right side of thumb opening for left mitten, and on the left side of thumb opening for right mitten. While working in foundation double crochet stitches insert the hook into the bottom of stitches under at least 2 threads.
Round 1 for left thumb: Attach the yarn in 11th dc on round 14, ch 2, [1 dc in 10th dc and 1 dc in 11th dc on round 13], 3 dc in 12th to 14th dc on round 13, [1 dc in 15th dc and 1 dc in 16th dc on round 13], 5 dc in 15th to 11th dc on round 14, sl st in first dc on working round. / 10 dc
Round 1 for right thumb: Attach the yarn in 20th dc on round 14, ch 2, 5 dc in 20th to 16th dc on round 14, [1 dc in 15th dc and 1 dc in 16th dc on round 13], 3 dc in 17th to 19th dc on round 13, [1 dc in 20th dc and 1 dc in 21th dc on round 13], sl st in first dc on working round. / 10 dc
