3. Making even and solid side edges in crochet
2013-06-25, by Jolanta Gustafsson
Usually when you work a piece in double crochet or teble crochet the side edges turn to be wavy or loose. Here is how I solve this problem.
I start each row with 2 chains if I am working in double crochet and work the first stitch into the first stitch on previous round, that is into the third stitch from the hook. If I am working in treble crochet I start each row with 3 chains and work the first stitch into the fourth stitch from the hook. At the end of the row when only one stitch is left, instead of making a regular double crochet or treble crochet stitch I work 2 stitches into the same stitch decreasing them into one. I call this stitch side double crochet (s-dc), or side treble crochet (s-tr).
The swatches below illustrate 3 different ways for making side edges in double crochet and treble crochet. The first swatch is made working stitches into each stitch on previous row. In the second swatch the first stitch on each row is substituted with chains. And the third swatch is made with side stitches described above.
