Mitten
The mitten is worked in Tunisian crochet in rounds. I used a lighter color for picking the stitches up, and the darker for working them off. In this pattern working the stitches off is always 2 loops at a time.
Round 1: Make 44 chains with a lighter yarn and start working into the third chain from the hook, work the round inserting the hook under 2 threads. { 1 yo, [3 dc] } 14 times. / 28 sts / 29 lps. The first yo is the first stitch on the round – put a marker on it so that you can always easily find the begining of the round, move the marker up every time you start a new round.
Round 2: Close the ring by starting to pick up stitches at the beginning of round 1, 28 tr. / 28 sts
Round 3: 28 tr. / 28 sts
Round 4: { 1 tr, 1 tk } 14 times. / 28 sts
Rounds 5-8: Repeat round 4.
Round 9: { 1 ts, (1 tr, 1 ts), 11 ts, (1 tr, 1 ts) } twice. / 32 sts
The remaining part of the mitten is worked in honeycomb stitch.
Round 10: { 1 tp, 1 ts } 16 times. / 32 sts
Round 11: { 1 ts, 1 tp } 16 times. / 32 sts
Rounds 12-20: Repeat rounds 10-11.
Round 21 for left mitten: 11 sts in pattern, cast on 5 sts using backward-loop cast-on, sk 5, 16 sts in pattern. / 32 sts
Round 21 for right mitten: 16 sts in pattern, cast on 5 sts using backward-loop cast-on, sk 5, 11 sts in pattern. / 32 sts
Rounds 22-35: Repeat rounds 10-11. / 32 sts
Round 36: { 2 tog, 12 sts in pattern, 2 tog } twice. / 28 sts
Round 37: { 2 tog, 10 sts in pattern, 2 tog } twice. / 24 sts
Round 38: { 2 tog, 8 sts in pattern, 2 tog } twice. / 20 sts
Round 39: { 2 tog, 6 sts in pattern, 2 tog } twice. / 16 sts
Round 40: { 2 tog, 4 sts in pattern, 2 tog } twice. / 12 sts
Round 41: { 2 tog, 2 sts in pattern, 2 tog } twice. / 8 sts
For the last round, work only the first pass. When you have picked up approx half of the stitches on the last round move the loops onto a help needle, continue to pick up the remaining stitches with the hook. When you have picked up all 8 stitches you are going to have 9 loops on the hook. Cut the yarn and thread it through all the loops, pull the yarn to tighten the opening. Fasten off on the inside, and weave in the end.
Thumb
The thumb is worked using 5 stitches that were skiped on round 21, 5 stitches picked up along the cast-on edge made on the same round, and 2 stitches picked up between rounds 20-21 – one stitch on each side of thumb opening. It makes 12 stitches. When you pick up a stitch between two rounds, insert the hook under one thread between the rounds from back to front, bring the yarn over hook and pull it through. This way the stitch will be twisted and it will prevent hole forming at the base of the thumb. Sometimes you get the holes anyway. It may be worth leaving a long tail of yarn before you start working the thumb – it can be used later for sewing up the holes in case they appear.
When you start working the first round for the thumb you don't need to make a foundation chain, but you need to have one loop on the hook. That's why you have to make a slip knot before you start picking up stitches for the thumb.
Round 1 for left thumb: make a slip knot, pick up a twisted stitch on the right side of thumb opening, 1 tk, 1 tr, 1 tk, 1 tr, 1 tk, pick up a twisted stitch on left side of thumb opening, pick up 5 sts along the cast-on edge. / 12 sts
Round 1 for right thumb: make a slip knot, pick up a twisted stitch on left side of thumb opening, pick up 5 sts along the cast-on edge, pick up a twisted stitch on the right side of thumb opening, 1 tk, 1 tr, 1 tk, 1 tr, 1 tk. / 12 sts
Round 2: { 1 tr, 1 tk } 6 times. / 12 sts
Rounds 3-9: Repeat round 2.
Round 10: { 1 tr, 2 tog, 1 tk, 2 tog } twice. / 8 sts
Cut the yarn and thread it through the vertical bars on the last round, pull the yarn to tighten the opening. Fasten off on the inside, and weave in the end.
